South Korean firm to build desalination plant in Africa

Posted on : Friday, 14th November 2014

A subsidiary of the company, GS Inima Environment S.A, secured the Djerba plant deal through a consortium with Spanish water management company Aqualia S.A, stated officials at GS E&C.

The desalination plant is expected to process 50,000 tonnes of seawater per day into drinkable fresh water, and has been scheduled for completion in the first half of 2016.

An official from the company said, “GS E&C will continue to expand its desalination and concession businesses in order to improve its performance. So far, the Middle East and Asia have been our core construction markets but we plan to expand it to Europe and Africa.”

With its partner Aqualia, GS Inima will take charge of designing and constructing the water management facility.

GS Inima has already constructed two desalination plants in Monstaganem and Cap Djinet, in Algeria. GS E&C has turned to North Africa and Europe in an attempt to increase its profits and has been focusing on water treatment as a fresh driver for growth since it acquired Inima in 2012.
